Pope likely to remain in hospital all next week - surgeon

(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 10 - Pope Francis will remain in Rome's Gemelli hospital "'probably for the whole of next week" after undergoing abdominal surgery on Wednesday to fix a hernia caused by a 2021 operation, surgeon Sergio Alfieri said on Saturday.
    "We have asked the Pope to spend part of his convalescence in hospital," Alfieri told reporters.
    "It is a decision made out of prudence and in order to facilitate recovery, but everything is going well.
    "We gave the pope medical advice and he made the decision".
    The doctor, who also performed colon surgery on Francis two years ago, said that, while the Argentine pontiff's medical parameters are "regular", he should make only "minimal efforts".
    As a result he said Francis had been asked not to give his regular Sunday Angelus address to the faithful from the window of his hospital room.
    Vatican Press Office Director Matteo Bruni said the pope would recite the Angelus prayer "in private" in his hospital room, adding that "those who wish to join him spiritually in prayer will be able to do so" While the pope's engagements up to June 18 have been suspended, Bruni said that those after that date are confirmed for the time being.
