(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 8 - Hunger and war are spreading in the world, Pope Francis told his 21 new cardinals at an Immaculate Conception feast Mass in St Peter's Sunday, asking where financial growth was going.
"What good is money in the bank, the comforts of apartments, the fake 'contacts' of the virtual world, if then hearts remain cold, empty, closed?" said Francis at a Mass for he princes of the Church he created Saturday.
"What good are the high levels of financial growth of privileged countries, if then half the world dies of hunger and war, and the others remain to watch indifferently?".
The Argentine pontiff, 87, who is still sporting a bruise on his chin from hitting a cupboard, spoke in his homily during the mass in St. Peter's Basilica with the new cardinals, on the feast of Mary's Immaculate Conception, underlining that "there is no salvation without women, because the Church is women".
