(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 15 - Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi
and government whips on Tuesday mooted seizing NGO migrant ships
which Italy says are operating illegally in the Mediterranean,
amid Rome's ban on them entering Italian waters.
Piantesodi and the whips from Brothers of Italy (FdI), the
League, Forza Italia (FI) and Noi Moderati (NM) discussed
applying an administrative sanction that would enable NGO run
ships such as those which have recently pushed against the
Italian policy to be seized.
Applying an administrative sanction the to NGOs, which would
also allow the confiscation of ships, is to be preferred to
criminal sanctions that in the past do not seem to have produced
the desired effects, the whips and minister agreed.
Tuesday's meeting, explained majority sources, was also useful
to "unite" the four parties on the eve of the minister's report
to parliament on the migrant issue. (ANSA).
