Ask yourself why nobody activates ESM - Meloni-Schlein

(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 11 - Premier Giorgia Meloni posed an open question for centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein at the presentation of PhotoAnsa 2023 in Rome Monday, asking her why no on had activated the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) bailout fund, the approval of whose reform has pitted Rome against its EU allies.
    "The ESM debate is a very Italian debate and also a very ideological one, testifying to the instrumentality of certain positions: you cannot talk about the ESM if you do not know the context," said the premier.
    "Certain statements make me smile, such as PD secretary Elly Schlein saying 'we cannot hold the whole of Europe down'.
    "Perhaps she doesn't know that the ESM exists, whoever wants to activate it can easily activate it.
    "Perhaps we should ask ourselves why, at a time when we are all jumping through hoops to find resources, no one wants to activate it: this would be the debate to open". (ANSA).
