(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 23 - Italy has started producing alcohol-free wine after the agriculture ministry changed a rule barring products with an alcohol content of less than 8.5 degrees from calling themselves 'vino'.
A new decree from the ministry of agriculture, forestry and food sovereignty says "it is possible to partially or totally reduce the alcohol content of wines, sparkling wines, quality sparkling wines, quality aromatic sparkling wines, aerated sparkling wines, semi-sparkling wines and aerated semi-sparkling wines".
Italian producers of low or no alcohol need no longer do it outside of the country, the decree says.
However, famed Wines of Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) are not included in the move, unlike in France. (ANSA).
