Deal with Albania will deter irregular migrants: Italy's PM

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 20 - "We process asylum requests on Albanian territory under Italian jurisdiction. What are we gaining from it? We benefit from reducing pressure on Italian territory and having a dissuasive effect on potential illegal migrants, which can be very powerful," said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Canale 5, referring to the agreement with Albania on migration management. "I thank the Albanian government, and I am deeply sorry for the inappropriate attacks Prime Minister Rama is receiving from the Italian and European left for reaching this agreement to assist Italy," Meloni also noted.
