Dabholkar, ICTP is a safe haven for at-risk scientists

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, NOV 25 - "Crossing geopolitical boundaries and being a safe haven for at-risk scientists are key commitments for Ictp." Atish Dabholkar, director of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, said this speaking at the World Science Forum in Budapest, Hungary, among the most prestigious events in global science diplomacy. This year's forum focused on the theme of the interface between science and politics during the time of global transformations.
    In Budapest, Dabholkar recalled that each year, ICTP hosts an average of "6,000 researchers from more than 150 different countries, some of them in conflict with each other," a concrete model of how science can overcome wars and tensions.
    He also reiterated the intention of the Center, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, to serve as a global reference point for addressing the world's most pressing challenges, including climate change and open access to new technologies. Its 60th anniversary will also be celebrated in Vienna at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IEAA), the center's longtime partner, with a high-profile event scheduled for November 26 (ANSA).
