(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 22 MAR - "Italy, Slovenia and Croatia are working together to abolish internal border controls within the Schengen area before the summer break", Tanja Fajon, Slovenian deputy pm and foreign minister said at a press conference in Trieste after the joint Fvg-Slovenia committee. "The goal is to start joint police patrols. If the project works well, they could be an alternative to border control. Our Home office ministers spoke about it yesterday", Fajon explained. "This is an important type of international cooperation between Countries on the Western Balkans route, along which there are serious securities issues with irregular migration and criminal network trade", the Slovenian Foreign minister remarked. Border control between Slovenia and Italy restarted at the end of October 2023.
"I hope that Slovenia and Friuli Venezia Giulia can revert to Schengen soon, because people to people contact, mobility and the movement of people with no border control are very tangible things and they are close to people's heart", Fajon concluded.
