(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 09 DIC - "We collaborate daily with our Slovenian and Croatian colleagues, as the exchanges between our police forces are fruitful. This cooperation not only aids in the fight against illegal immigration but also in combating the exploitation of migrants arriving in this region. " This statement was made by the Police Chief of Trieste, Pietro Ostuni, during a meeting today at the Pesek border crossing with his counterparts from Koper and Pula, where they exchanged traditional holiday greetings.
"Since October 2023," Ostuni noted, "border controls with Slovenia have been reinstated and will continue until the first half of 2025. These controls are yielding positive results, as evidenced by the 230 human traffickers arrested by the State Police over the past 13 months. This is the outcome of dedicated efforts." Ostuni emphasized that cross-border controls continue with joint patrols on trains arriving from Slovenia and through overland routes. He also mentioned ongoing collaboration between the investigative offices of the three countries.
Istrian Police Chief Alen Klabot confirmed the "good cooperation" among the police forces of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, highlighting the "effective functioning of the crime control network" in his jurisdiction.
Koper's Police Chief, Alenka Korosec, remarked, Thee cooperation with Italy is excellent, and border controls aim to combat international terrorism." "There are no issues with the deportation of migrants to Slovenia. Those who do not have the right to stay in Italy are accepted into Slovenia according to international agreements and are managed by reception centers," she explained. Regarding cross-border crime, the Slovenian Police Chief stated, "There are no major issues; the collaboration is excellent, which allows us to address any potential threats effectively."
