(ANSA) - ATHENS, JUL 30 - "Greece must urgently repeal the
laws that are causing the systematic and illegal deprivation of
liberty of asylum seekers detained in the Closed controlled
access center" of Samos, a new Amnesty International report
said.
"The EU should hold Greece accountable for human rights
violations in that center and should ensure that model does not
become an example for the recently adopted Pact on Migration and
Asylum," the NGO reported.
Opened in 2021, the Samos center is part of the €276 million
plan with which the European Commission financed the
construction of new reception centers for migrants in the Greek
Aegean islands.
"Security cameras and barbed wire surround the centre, which
has become so similar to a prison. People do not have enough
water or adequate medical care and, in some cases, not even
beds," Deprose Muchena, director of Amnesty International's
Human Rights Impact Division, denounced. (ANSA).
