Moldova declares state of emergency, Russian gas at risk

Contract expires with Gazprom on December 31

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, DEC 13 - Moldova's parliament has voted to declare a national state of emergency for 60 days beginning December 16 due to the risk of disruptions in Russian gas supplies beginning January 1, according to Reuters online. The measure was supported by 56 of the chamber's 101 members in a vote just after midnight. Moldova receives Russian natural gas via Ukraine, which has announced that it will not renew its transit agreement with Russian gas giant Gazprom. The contract will expire on December 31.
