(ANSA) - KARPACZ, 04 SET - A 'road map' and an 'ad hoc' commissioner to address the issue of the enlargement of the European Union: the proposal is put forward by the former head of the cabinet of the Minister for European Affairs and president of the 'La Parabola' Study Centre, Francesco Tufarelli, during the discussion panel 'The shape of the EU after the European Parliament elections' during the 33rd Economic Forum in Karpacz (Poland).
"The commissioner - explained Tufarelli - must be a very well structured person and in excellent relations with colleagues: authority and courage are the necessary qualities. They have been so in every enlargement: I still remember in the last major enlargement (2004) a lot of pressure to delay the operation. In the following years we continued to suffer criticism. If the new candidates are not accepted they will do something else and this is not good. If we had given up on enlargement in 2004, the situation would be really difficult now." "I have great confidence - he added - that the next Polish presidency of the EU will start the new enlargement. In fact, all the candidate countries, and not just the Macedonians, need to see that the European Union has a single and decisive direction The different positions of the candidate countries require different solutions and times. Even in 2004 we studied an 'ad hoc' solution for Bulgaria and Romania. However, without delaying the entry of other states, it is important to make a shared 'road map' visible. In this sense, it would be important for the European budget to provide adequate resources for enlargement." (ANSA).
