Conservatives prevail at EU vote in Balkans

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 10 - Conservative parties won European elections in EU-member countries in the Balkans and Hungary.
    Former Prime Minister Janez Jansa's centre-right SDS (EPP) won the most seats in Slovenia's European elections, four out of nine, while Prime Minister Robert Golob's ruling Freedom Movement (Renew) came in a distant second with two seats, according to the portal Euractiv. Croatia's ruling conservatives have won half of the country's EU Parliament seats. Exit polls show Croatia's ruling conservative HDZ (EPP) winning six of the country's twelve seats in the European Parliament. Romania is sending far-right politicians to the European Parliament for the first time, but AUR's lower-than-expected vote total has mainstream parties in the country breathing a sigh of relief.
    The GERB party of former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov (EPP) won convincingly in Bulgaria's early parliamentary elections and the European vote, while Orbán's Fidesz faces its worst-ever EU election result. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party won the European elections in Hungary on Sunday, but it was the party's lowest-ever EU election result, as the opposition gained ground, the portal reported.
