Romania's Iohannis drops NATO chief bid, backs Rutte: govt

For the defence alliance's top job

(ANSA-AFP) - BRUSSELS, JUN 20 - Romania announced Thursday that President Klaus Iohannis was dropping out of the race for NATO chief, and Bucharest was backing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the defence alliance's top job. "The President of Romania informed... NATO allies that he withdrew his candidacy for the post of secretary general of the organisation," the Supreme Council of National Defence announced, adding that Romania now backed Rutte.
