(ANSA) - BELGRADE, AUG 10 - Serbian Construction, Infrastructure, and Traffic Minister Goran Vesic announced this week that the first of a fleet of Nazi boats sunk in the Danube at Prahovo had been raised from the riverbed.
The so-called Kriegsmarine Black Sea Fleet boats were sunk during a withdrawal at the end of WWII to avoid being captured by the Soviet Red Army in September 1944. According to some estimates, dozens of boats remain on the Danube's bed, many of which contain explosives. Another 21 sunked boats will be pulled out of the river in the next few months, followed by approximately 80 other vessels later, Vesic anticipated. (ANSA).
