(ANSA) - ROME, 21 MAG - Italy has activated the EU Civil
Protection Mechanism to request, in particular, high-capacity
pumping equipment. Following the request, the European
Commission says, Brussels "mobilized offers from Austria,
Bulgaria, Germany, France, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and
Slovakia to help Italian authorities cope with the heavy
flooding" in Emilia-Romagna.
"The European Emergency Response
Coordination Center has been in constant contact with the
Italian authorities, who are currently evaluating the offers,
the EU stands ready to provide further help if needed." The EU's
Copernicus service, the commission adds, has also provided
emergency satellite mapping of the affected areas, following a
request from the Italian civil protection department on May 16.
