(ANSA) - ROMA, 21 AGO - Farmers harvest grapes at an orchid in Kandahar, Afghanistan, 21 August 2024. The grape harvest in Kandahar has dropped by 25 percent this year, totaling an estimated 195,000 tons due to untimely rains linked to climate change, according to the Kandahar Chamber of Commerce. Farmers expressed concern over high export taxes imposed by neighboring Pakistan, which have risen by 18 percent since 01 July 2024, making it less profitable for them. Despite these challenges, exports continue with up to six trucks of grapes sent to Pakistan daily. Afghan businessmen are exploring alternative markets to mitigate reliance on Pakistan amid rising tariffs, attributed to conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (ANSA).
