(ANSA) - ROMA, 12 FEB - People stand next to roadblocks placed by wives and widows of armed forces soldiers to protest against the appointment of new defense minister Prince Johnson in Bushrod Island, a suburb of Monrovia, Liberia, 12 February 2024. Liberian President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces Joseph Nyuma Boakai on 12 February accepted the resignation of the recently confirmed Minister of National Defense Prince C. Johnson that was submitted 'due to the current political and civil disturbances occasioned by the protest of women believed to be wives of service men', according to a presidential statement. Women, believed to be wives and widows of current and late soldiers of the Liberian Armed Forces staged protests and set up roadblocks on 11 February demanding the dismissing of the new defense minister over alleged maltreatment of military personnel and denying them of incentives and benefits while serving as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia.
