(ANSA) - ROMA, 23 DIC - Survivors of the Asian earthquake and
tsunami that struck the region December 26 walk along a remote
road south of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Thursday 06 January
2004(reissued 23 December 2024). December 2024 marks the 20th
anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, or Boxing Day
tsunami, which occurred on 26 December 2004, triggered by a
magnitude 9. 2 earthquake in the Indian Ocean off the west coast
of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The tsunami, one of the
deadliest natural disasters in recent history, devastated areas
along the coastal regions of the Indian Ocean claiming more than
220,000 lives, displacing more than half a million survivors,
and leaving hundreds of thousands without a livelihood. (ANSA).
