Reforms are needed but there is no
talk of them, even though the resources are available,
Confindustria President Carlo Bonomi said on Monday.
"There has been talk of reforms for 30-40 years. Today there is
the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), the resources
are there," Bonomi said during a conference on the Mediterranean
and transition in Ustica.
"Reforms must be carried out, but I am not hearing about them,"
he added.
On the massive EU-funded post-Covid plan to make the economy
greener and more modern and which has got bogged down in delays,
Bonomi said "it is difficult to accuse this government".
"For us the NRRP was wrong from the outset, we contested the
approach taken by the Conte government. Now we are paying the
price, because (the plan) contains projects that have little to
do with the country's growth," said the leader of the industrial
employers' association.
The European Commission is still making assessments for approval
of the long-delayed payment of Italy's third tranche of NRRP
funding, worth 19 billion euros, while work on the fourth
installment worth 16 billion euros has just begun.
Payments are made by the EU on condition that agreed targets
have been met.
On protecting workers from the health and safety implications of
working in the intense heat italy has been enduring, Bonomi said
the "issue must be tackled with great seriousness".
"There are many solutions on the table such as the temporary
lay-off fund and working from home. We are open to discussion
because we believe that workers' health is an asset to be
protected," he added.
Employers' associations and unions are due to gather on Tuesday
for a second meeting at the labour ministry to tackle the issue.
