Three people were pulled out of the rubble alive by firefighters on Saturday after a residential building collapsed in the town of Canale Monterano, near Rome, sources said.
The three have been taken to hospital.
Investigators are trying to work out what caused the building to collapse.
One hypothesis is that it was caused by a explosion linked to a gas leak.
There are reports that gas could be smelt in the area.
The three survivors, a woman and two men aged 18 and 40, are not, as previously reported, members of the same family.
It was initially thought that the woman and the older man were the parents of the 18-year-old.
The teenager's parents, however, were not in the building when it collapsed.
