Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani on
Tuesday said search operations to find a missing woman and her
five-month-old grandson were ongoing in the Tuscan area between
Livorno and Pisa where "up to 226 millimetres of rain fell in
six hours", well above the average of a rainy month, he said.
"Two people are missing at the moment and operations coordinated
by Tuscany's civil protection continued overnight, thanks to all
the people deployed in rescue efforts", the governor explained.
Rescue operations that kicked off on Monday night continued
Tuesday in the areas "between Castagneto Carducci, San Vincenzo,
Monteverdi Marittimo and Montecatini Val di Cecina" between the
provinces of Livorno and Pisa.
"Such intense bad weather had never hit the area since the
beginning of weather reports", said Giani.
The woman and her grandson were reported missing in Montecatini
Val di Cecina near Pisa after the Sferza stream broke its banks
Monday due to torrential rain in the area.
The child's parents and grandfather, who are German tourists,
were rescued from the roof of their vacation home where they had
taken shelter due to flooding in the town.
