Italy's supreme Cassation Court on
Thursday upheld a 26-month jail term for a 24-year-old man who
had yanked a cell phone away from his former partner to check
her text messages.
In what may be a ground-breaking ruling, the court
concluded that taking someone else's phone by force to read
their private conversations is similar to outright robbery.
The man had reportedly grabbed his ex-girlfriend's phone in
order to find proof of her alleged infidelity.
In this way, he was "violating her right to privacy" and
"self-determination in human relationships" - comparing his
action to robbery.
