Benedict XVI has
testified in the proceedings for the beatification of Pope John
Paul I, Famiglia Cristiana (Christian Family) Catholic magazine
reported Friday.
No pope has ever before testified for the beatification of
another, the magazine said.
John Paul I died 37 years ago after being pope for just 33
days.
Beatification is a recognition accorded by the Catholic
Church of a dead person's entrance into Heaven and his or her
capacity to intercede on behalf of individuals who pray in his
or her name.
Beatification, with which a holy person earns the title
Blessed, is the last rung on the ladder to canonisation and
full sainthood.
