Normal services resumed at
Catania airport on Wednesday following a brief closure to
incoming aircraft due to a major thunderstorm in the area.
In total seven flights into the eastern Sicilian airport
had to be rerouted to the regional capital Palermo or to Lamezia
Terme across the Messina strait on the Italian mainland.
Also in the Catania region drivers called on fire fighters
for assistance after getting stuck on flooded roads, while a
main road linking the coastal towns of Acitrezza and Acireale
was blocked by a landslide.
It has been raining heavily in the area since the early
hours of the morning.
