Industrial development
association Svimez said Tuesday that low earnings were
generating poverty in southern Italy, where 62% of people earn
40% of the national average or less. "The south is increasingly
poor," the Svimez report said. It added that absolute poverty
levels had more than doubled in Italy as a whole during the
economic crisis. "Between 2005 and 2008 the number in absolute
poverty in Italy did not reach two million, in the 2014-2014
period it was over four million," it said.
