A 50-year-old woman from
Campi Bisenzio near Florence has been confirmed as having
contracted meningitis C, bringing the total cases of meningitis
in the region to 12 thus far this year, the local health
authority said on Monday.
The woman is being treated in the infectious diseases unit
of Florence's Careggi Hospital and didn't have direct contact
with the public in her administrative job.
Italian Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin will discuss the
situation on Tuesday in a previously scheduled meeting with
Tuscan regional councillor Stefania Saccardi and representatives
from the Italian medicines agency (AIFA) and the Higher Health
Institute (ISS).
Saccardi in recent days said the number of meningitis
vaccinations has increased in the region, and the vaccination is
free to all through age 45.
In 2015, there were 38 cases of meningitis in the region.
