An extra detachment of some 50 Austrian police on Tuesday started controlling the traffic to stop migrants crossing into Austria in the immediate vicinity of the Brenner pass border with Italy in Tyrolean territory, local police said. The controls are being carried out on the motorway, on the State highway and on trains, they said. In all, some 80 Austrian officers took part in the beefed-up controls. Austria has stepped up migrant controls in the face of what it says is a rising number of migrants moving through Italy from North Africa - an increase Premier Matteo Renzi denies.
