The leader of the rightwing anti-immigrant Northern League party has compared Lower House Speaker Laura Boldrini to a blow-up doll, sources said Monday.
"Boldrini's double is here on stage - I don't know if she's been exhibited yet," Matteo Salvini said at a rally of the small opposition party last Friday night in the town of Soncino, in Cremona province, indicating a blow-up doll. Video footage of the incident has been circulating online, sparking criticism.
"Women are not dolls and the political battle is carried out with arguments - for those who have any - and not with insults," Boldrini replied on Facebook. "I leave it up to the rest of you to comment".
"I'm not apologizing to Boldrini - she's the one who should apologize to the people of Italy because she's the number one anti-Italian racist," Salvini told Sky TG24 news channel.
