Italy's unemployment rate fell 0.1% between June and July, to 11.4%, the same rate as May, ISTAT said Wednesday. The number of unemployed, at 2.9 million, fell 1.3% (39,000) compared to June.
The fall involved both men (-1.4%) and women (-1.2%) and all age brackets except for the 15-24-year-olds (+23,000) and the 25-34-year-olds (+38,000). The number of 'inactive' people rose by 53,000.
Italy's unemployment rate among 15-24-year-olds rose 2% to 39.2% in July over June, returning to the levels of the start of the year, ISTAT said. So-called 'inactive' young people, who are not in work or looking for it, mostly because they are studying, were not included.
The number of people employed in Italy fell 0.3% or by 63,000 in July over June, the first monthly fall in four months, but rose 266,000 or 1.2% over July 2015, ISTAT said Wednesday. The self-employed fell 68,000 over the month while payroll workers were steady.
