Over one in four people resident
in Italy in 2015, 28.7%, were "at risk of poverty or social
exclusion", according to an estimate released by national
statistics agency ISTAT on Tuesday. The rate is slightly higher
than that of 28.3% for 2014. As many as 17.469 million people
in Italy are at risk of poverty of social exclusion, ISTAT said,
translating the percentage into numbers. This means that targets
set by the European Strategy 2020 are "still far off". Under
those goals, Italy must bring those at risk under the threshold
of 12.882 million by 20120. The present total is "4.587 million
units above that target", ISTAT said.
