Jai Hindley on Sunday became the
first Australian winner of the Giro d'Italia, defending the one
and a half minute lead he snatched from 2019 winner Richard
Carapaz of Ecuador on the penultimate mountainous stage in a
short time trial into the finish at Verona.
The 26-year-old from Perth, whose one-second lead in the
climactic time trial two years ago was overtaken by Britain's
Tao Geoghegan Hart, said "this trophy is beautiful, and it is
almost bigger than me.
"I couldn't be happier...and to think that as a little boy I
wanted to become a rugby player".
