Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani on Thursday said Italy was in favour of a
two-State solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, noting
that any other move would be wrong and counterproductive.
Italy in the Middle East needs to be "present, we have to
undertake an active role for peace and ensure that the ceasefire
can continue, with the final objective of being able to unify
Palestine.
"The Italian position is clear, two peoples and two States, the
newborn Palestinian State will need to recognize Israel and will
have to be recognized by Israel", Tajani said while visiting the
Israeli port of Ashdod to hand over aid as part of the Food for
Gaza initiative Italy has spearheaded to get food aid to
Palestinian civilians.
"Any other move would be unrealistic, wrong and I would say
counterproductive", he added.
Tajani was visiting Ashdod as part of a mission together with
University and Research Minister Anna Maria Bernini to take part
in a ceremony to receive aid donated by Italy to the World Food
Program as part of the initiative Food for Gaza including 15
tons of essential goods.
On Wednesday, Tajani said Italy will look at United States
President Donald Trump's plan for Gaza while adding that Rome
remains in favour of a two-State solution.
Trump said Tuesday that the US will take over the Gaza Strip and
suggested that Palestinians could live in "peace and harmony"
elsewhere in a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
