Alitalia pilots and flight attendants began a four-hour strike at 11 am local time on Tuesday, with employees of struggling private Sardinia-based airline Meridiana also striking at the same time.
Alitalia cancelled 142 flights across its network in view
of the strike, contacting affected passengers in advance and
rebooking them onto other flights.
Ground staff were also available at Fiumicino and Milan
airports to provide assistance.
Alitalia CEO Cramer Ball went in person to check on the
level of assistance offered to customers at Rome airport,
apologising to travellers on behalf of the airline for the
disruption.
Meanwhile Meridiana cancelled 13 flights due to a
combination of strike action and reiterated sick leave among
staff.
