It is not up to the German government
to stop UniCredit's takeover of Commerzbank, a spokesman for
Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Wednesday.
In its latest move, Italy's second-largest lender has asked the
European Central Bank for permission to raise its stake in the
German bank to 29.9%.
"We are not actors. The government holds shares," said German
government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in response to a
reporter's question on whether the Scholz government intends to
avoid the takeover of Commerzbank by UniCredit.
"There is no further reflection to avoid something and this now
depends on the capital market players."
