Police
on Monday seized 173 kilos of cocaine worth approximately 36
million euros at the port of Gioia Tauro in Calabria.
Finance and customs police found the cocaine hidden in bags
inside a container that had arrived from Mexico transporting
pectin, a food additive normally used in jams and jellies.
Gioia Tauro, the Mediterranean's biggest container port, is
frequently the subject of probes into infiltration by the
Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta mafia, which controls the European
cocaine trade.
