A marriage is not automatically invalidated if one of the spouses has a sex change after the wedding, the supreme Court of Cassation ruled on Tuesday. The court stressed, however, that the ruling does not "extend the model of marriage union to homo-affective unions". The ruling related to an appeal by an couple from the Emilia-Romagna region, Alessandro B. and Alessandra T., against the interior ministry invaliding their marriage after the husband had a sex change and asked to be registered as a woman in the civil registry. The court upheld their appeal against this "imposed divorce".
