Twenty-one people received hospital treatment after being hurt in a collision on the B line of the Rome metro, ANSA sources said Friday. None of the injured people were seriously hurt, the sources said, but one witness described it as "a nightmare".
"It has been a nightmare scene, almost a massacre", said a witness who gave his name as Francesco.
"There are those who think this only happens in the movies," added Francesco, a postal worker who was a passenger on one of the trains.
"You cannot risk your life just to go to work".
The two passengers who came off worst suffered a broken collarbone and a suspected fractured pelvis respectively. The accident that took place in the area of the Eur Palasport station in the south of the city. The city's executive councillor for transport Guido Improta said two trains travelling in the same direction bumped into each other at about 30km/h. "Now the dynamics of what happened have to be worked out," said Improta, who left a meeting with Mayor Ignazio Marino and rushed to the scene of the accident. "It's certainly bizarre. There was certainly a human error".
The witness Francesco said that the crash was "a huge scare" that threw passengers to the floor of the metro car.
He said they began to search for a way out but the doors on the train cars were closed.
"There were scenes of panic, people were frightened, screaming.
"I saw many who were terrified".
