Italy's Coast Guard on Tuesday
coordinated the rescue of some 2,000 asylum seekers off vessels
in distress in 16 different operations off the coasts of Libya.
The multiple rescues involved Coast Guard, Navy and finance
police vessels, a Maltese ship, a merchant marine ship, and tug
Siem Pilot, which Norway contributed to the EU's Frontex border
patrol.
