A public bus in Rome caught fire on
Wednesday morning, causing panic among the morning rush-hour
crowd of passengers aboard, ANSA sources said.
All passengers were safely evacuated before bus 495 became
fully engulfed in flames on Corso d'Italia, a large thoroughfare
about two kilometres north of the city's central train station.
Some passengers said they smelled a burning odor prior to
the flames breaking out.
The first responders were a patrol of plainclothes
Carabinieri police driving on the other side of the street at
the time of the incident, who secured the area to prevent
injuries and damage in the event of an explosion.
The fire may have started in the bus's engine, sources
said.
