Anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S) leader Beppe Grillo on Wednesday phoned embattled
M5S Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi to get her version of events in
Rome amid accusations of lying over a cabinet member's probe and
mass resignations, sources said. Grillo reiterated that the M5S
must remain more united than ever before because Rome is too
important, the sources said. There have been reports that Grillo
and Raggi are at odds over whether some cabinet members and
other staff should resign amid what the media has called chaos,
spurred primarily by the long-denied probe into environment
pointwoman Paola Muraro. Raggi, Rome's first woman mayor, was
elected in a June landslide and her tenure is seen as a test bed
for the M5S's ambitions to govern Italy.
