A father killed himself Monday
after murdering his two children, aged two and a half and four,
with a hammer in a flat in the centre of Trento, police said.
The body of Gabriele Sorrentino, a financial worker and
former Carabiniere, was found at the bottom of a cliff that
dominates the northern Italian city and is accessible on a
funicular railway, near where his Volvo SUV was found. Police
said he had thrown himself off to his death.
The mother, Sara Failla, a vet, said economic problems linked
to the purchase of a new flat may have been linked to the
murders.
Trento Assistant Prosecutor Pasquale Profiti said "the main
lead is linked to a motive of a financial type".
He said Sorrentino had left no note.
"It was a sudden event, of which there had been no warnings
signs," Profit said.
Relations between the husband and wife were "excellent", he
said.
