The demolition of what remains of the Morandi bridge in Genoa started on earnest on Friday almost six months after the viaduct collapsed in a disaster that claimed 43 lives.
Premier Giuseppe Conte and Transport and Infrastructure Minister Danilo Toninelli were present as the operation to remove one of the remaining sections got underway.
Toninelli said the construction of the new viaduct that will replace the Morandi bridge will be "the image of the revival of the country".
