Government Undersecretary Alfredo
Mantovano on Tuesday said alcohol abuse had become more common
in teen girls than boys and that alcohol was the most used
psychoactive substance among minors, addressing the
Parliamentary commission for infancy and adolescence.
"Alcohol is the most used psychoactive substance among minors"
with "69% of teens drinking alcoholic beverages over the course
of 2023", including "13% who were intoxicated and 25% who
practiced binge drinking", said Mantovano.
The undersecretary went on to say that teens start drinking at a
younger age and that more teen girls were drinking alcohol,
according to 2023 figures.
"Although drinking alcohol is viewed as typically male
behaviour, in 2023 it was mostly girls who consumed excessive
amounts of alcoholic beverages", Mantovano told the commission.
