Premier Giorgia Meloni said in a note
issued by her office at Palazzo Chigi on Friday that reports
coming from Venezuela "represent another unacceptable act of
repression by the regime" of Venezuelan President Nicolas
Maduro.
"The news coming from Venezuela represents another unacceptable
act of repression by the Maduro regime, whose proclaimed
electoral victory we don't recognize".
"We intend to continue working for a democratic and peaceful
transition", said the note.
"The legitimate aspirations for freedom and democracy of the
Venezuelan people must finally come to life", said the note
Maduro is set to be sworn in for a third term on Friday,
remaining in power in spite of a six-month-long dispute over
presidential elections held in July and international calls for
him to step down.
Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been briefly detained
when leaving a rally against the president and Venezuela has
closed its border with Colombia ahead of Maduro's inauguration.
