The triptych of concerts that the Vienna Symphony Orchestra will perform in Trieste from 10 to 13 April was presented at Metternich Palace in Vienna. In the presence of the Italian Ambassador in Vienna, Giovanni Pugliese, Senator Tatyana Rojc, Trieste's Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel, Clemens Mantl, spokesperson for the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Orchestra's Superintendent Jan Nast and conductor Petr Popelka illustrated the programme of the three concerts of the 'Spring from Vienna' Festival.
The protagonists of the first evening were excerpts from Giuseppe Verdi's operas Macbeth, Aida and Don Carlo, juxtaposed with the first act of Richard Wagner's Die Walküre. On the second evening, Petr Popelka will instead combine Mozart's Prague Symphony and Mahler's Fourth. The final evening will feature polkas and waltzes by Johann Strauss Sohn as well as works by Giacomo Puccini, Pyotr Tchaikovsky (Capriccio Italien) and Franz Schmidt (Notre Dame). Sponsor of the event is Generali Assicurazioni. The final evening will be broadcast by state TV ӦRF in honour of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
"The partnership between the Viennese Orchestra and the Politeama Rossetti Theatre only serves to consolidate the artistic and cultural collaboration between our two countries, and I am certain that this fine project realised in cooperation with the city of Trieste will bring our respective musical cultures even closer together," said Ambassador Pugliese.
"The Trieste Theatre was the first in which the Vienna Symphony Orchestra performed outside Austria, in 1902, under the direction of Ferdinand Löwe. Trieste was still part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, so it will be an exciting 'homecoming' for the Viennese. The cultural ties between Vienna and Trieste are inseparable. And with the "Wiener Frühling", this ideal bridge will be further strengthened," recalled the president of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, Francesco Granbassi, also emphasising how the collaboration with the Austrian Orchestra also represents a tribute to the ideals that inspire the "GO! 2025 - Nova Gorica and Gorizia, European Capitals of Culture 2025".
Superintendent Nast, on the other hand, emphasised that the three-concert project is part of a broader framework: "We want to combine the best of two cultures: Trieste, one of the most diverse cities in Central Europe, and our Easter concert, which for decades has been our favourite greeting to spring. As musical ambassadors of the city of Vienna, with the new festival we want to revitalise and interpret in a modern way the common history of the two cities of Vienna and Trieste and the great cultural heritage of the entire Alpine-Danubian-Adriatic region. Music as a connection from yesterday to today and across borders'.
