On the occasion of the 24th Italian Language Week in the World, dedicated to the theme 'Italian and the book: the world between the lines', several events were organised to promote and spread knowledge of the Italian language and culture.
On 18 October, the inauguration of the COMITES public library project was held, which aims to create a point of reference for the circulation and sharing of books in the Italian language.
Ambassador Stefano Queirolo Palmas attended the inauguration ceremony together with the President of COMITES, Licia Colombo, the head of Cultural Affairs of the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Relations, Ambassador Rosa Maria Nadal, the legal representative of the Nonna Rina Foundation, Aldo Burzatta, and members of COMITES, as well as representatives of the local community and associations, such as the CTIM Association and the RAVA Association of San Pedro de Macorìs.
The library, housed in the premises of the Nonna Rina Foundation, in the Gazcue sector of the capital, is proposed not only as a place to borrow books, but also as a community and cultural meeting centre, which was lacking until now. The list of available books and information on the library is published on the COMITES website.
The Embassy in Santo Domingo promoted further initiatives in the context of SLIM, including several Italian-language screenings of the film Il Giovane Favoloso, at universities where Italian language courses are in place. The first screening was held on 22 October in the library of the Universidad Central del Este (UCE), a university where several courses are held each year, attended by over 100 students. The screening of Mario Martone's film on the life of Giacomo Leopardi thus enabled the young audience to get to know one of the greatest representatives of Italian culture in depth, helping to bring students closer to our literature. A further screening of Il Giovane Favoloso is planned at the Escuela de Idiomas of the Universidad APEC (UNAPEC), another academic institution where Italian is taught.
Similar initiatives will also be held as part of the European Film Festival (EUROCINE), which will be promoted by the Delegation of the European Union, and to which this seat has actively contributed, also in collaboration with the Dirección General de Cine and the Cinemateca Dominicana. A programme of screenings will be held from 25 October to 3 November at the Museum of Modern Art. The programme includes two Italian films: Io Sto Bene and Primadonna, which will be screened on 28 October and 2 November respectively.
A joint initiative with the Swiss Embassy is also being organised to screen an Italian-language film at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD).
