The Italian community in Mumbai gathered on 4 November at the Christian cemetery in Sewri for the traditional ceremony in memory of the Italian prisoners of war deported to India by the British army during the Second World War.
The celebration was officiated by Father Davide Castagnetti inside the Military Shrine built in 1954 by the Ministry of Defence and recently restored on the initiative of the Italian Consulate General in Mumbai with the support of the Defence Culture and Memory Protection Office.
"This memorial," underlined the Consul General of Italy in Mumbai, Walter Ferrara, "is not only a dutiful and sincere tribute to the sacrifice of so many compatriots, but a concrete testimony of the importance of memory. Only through awareness of the past can history be a teacher of life'.
