The Italian Embassy in Beijing kicked off the programme of the ninth Italian Cuisine Week in the world with an initiative on the promotion of the province of Siena and its wine and cultural excellence. The event ('Italy in a Wine Glass: Siena Edition') was attended by the President of the International Observatory for Cultural Diplomacy (Oidc) Monica Barbafiera and the Observatory's institutional relations advisor and number two of the Fondazione Enoteca Italiana Siena, Mario Valgimigli.
The other institutional guests included a delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture's Quality Control Inspectorate and the State Mint and Printing Institute, according to a note. "Italy boasts the highest number of wines with geographical indications, confirming the extraordinary biodiversity of the territories along the Boot and the inestimable richness of our local traditions," Ambassador Massimo Ambrosetti said in his welcoming address. The event opened with a seminar on the geographical indications of wine and the excellence of the Sienese territory, including several topics related to Made in Italy agrifood products, such as the protection of Docg wines.
Also on the programme was a tasting of some of the best-known wines of the Sienese territory, organised by the Chinese sommelier Jordan Zhao, AIS (Italian Sommelier Association) certified, with the contribution of the Chianti Classico Wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino and Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Consortia. From the deep bond with the areas of origin "come the unique and unmistakable characteristics of our wines, recognised and appreciated by consumers all over the world, including those in China, who are increasingly looking for authentic, quality products. In 2023, wine is confirmed as the main item of Italian agrifood exports to China," Ambrosetti added.
