A meeting of European
Commissioners on Wednesday highlighted "serious shortcomings" in
a new report on the state of Greece's external borders, European
Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said. This was the
first of four possible steps in a procedure preparing the
possible activation of Article 26 of the Schengen accords, which
envisages the extension of controls on the internal borders for
one or more countries for up to two years. Some EU members have
asked that the article be activated.
